SUMMARY:Fostering Artful Early Childhood Classes
DESCRIPTION:The Maine Department of Education invites you to be part of an exciting professional development opportunity\, “Fostering Artful Early Childhood Classrooms”. Early Childhood Specialist\, Sue Reed and Visual and Performing Arts Specialist\, Beth Lambert are looking for teachers who want to energize their teaching and learning through focusing on art in the public preschool classroom. Applicants must apply in teams of two: one Public Preschool teacher and one Visual Art teacher from the same district. The Visual Arts teacher must currently teach at the elementary level. \nUnder the expertise of Early Childhood facilitator\, Terri Petnov\, and Early Childhood Arts facilitator\, Judy Fricke\, teams will work on building a collaborative partnership to ensure that preschool students receive an artful learning experience. Public preschool teachers will learn the research as to why art is important in a preschool classroom and how it encompasses Maine’s Early Learning and Development Standards and how to include art into their daily routines. Visual Art teachers will learn developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches to teaching art to our youngest learners. As a culmination of their work\, participants will create a presentation to share with their school community. \nThe training is free and each team selected will receive $500 worth of equipment and supplies for their classroom. SUMMARY:MDOE-ELA Formative Assessment (Grades K-5)
DESCRIPTION:The Maine DOE is offering a second series of workshops to support effective use of formative assessment practices in PK-5 classrooms to inform literacy instruction and bolster student learning. Three successive workshops\, facilitated by Maine DOE specialists and teacher leaders from across the state\, will build from current practices to extend and deepen knowledge about formative assessment. Learn more about: \n\ncomponents of formative assessment: learning intentions and success criteria; collecting and analyzing evidence of student learning; providing actionable feedback; and employing peer and self-assessment opportunities\,\nformative assessment strategies that benefit literacy teaching and learning\, and\ninstruction to promote surface\, deep and transfer learning related to ELA/Literacy standards.\n\nSession 1 will introduce foundational understanding of formative assessment practices and focus on creating meaningful learning goals and success criteria. \nSession 2 will dig deeper into collecting evidence of student learning through observation and student work\, analyzing the evidence and responding with actionable feedback. \nSession 3 will continue the focus from session 2 and expand with examples of how to incorporate in peer and self-assessment opportunities. \nNew participants in the network should register to attend all three day-long (8:30-3:00) sessions in one region of the state. The cost of attendance for the three sessions is $100 total. \nReturning participants (educators who took part in the 2016-17 series) are welcome to attend all three sessions\, but may opt to attend only sessions 2 and 3 where content will be expanded upon from last year.
