SUMMARY:History in Stones: Mapping Cemeteries to Teach History with Dr. Kimberly Sebold
DESCRIPTION:  \nCACE is pleased to once again offer this workshop\, sure to be of interest for middle/high school history teachers\, as well as preservice teachers. \nDr. Kimberly Sebold\, History Professor at UMPI\, has been working on a public history project called History in Stones:  Mapping Cemeteries to Preserve and Teach the History of Central Aroostook County.  The project goal is twofold: create searchable maps of the cemeteries in Central Aroostook County using ArcGIS Online and write an interactive history of Central Aroostook County to be used by middle and high school social studies teachers who teach Maine History and American History.  ArcGIS Online StoryMap Journals will be the platform for these interactive histories of the area. To make history more relevant and tangible\, the project histories will focus on the lives of certain individuals in area cemeteries by explaining how world\, national and state events affected these people and Central Aroostook County communities. Curriculum will be developed and linked to the Maine State Learning Results for both the searchable cemetery maps and the interactive StoryMap Journals. All of the information will be posted on an UMPI supported website that is free to anyone. Area teachers can help by reviewing and using the materials in their classrooms and providing feedback. High school teachers can help by identifying students who need volunteer areas and could help clean\, georeference and photograph cemeteries from May to October under the supervision of Dr. Sebold. \nExplore the project website here (in progress).

SUMMARY:How We Learn: Five Essential Practices for Successful Learning with Dr. John Almarode
DESCRIPTION:“I don’t know” and “I don’t remember” are phrases that haunt every classroom teacher and learner. How do we create experiences that lead to better learning for all students so that they will “know” and “remember”? Over the past fifteen years\, the science of learning has provided many insights into how we think. Furthermore\, these promising principles provide a starting point for inspired and passionate teachers to build the capacity in learners to see themselves as their own teachers. This workshop shows you how! The body of research on how we learn provides well established principles and practices that enhance the learning outcomes for each of our students. Moving beyond performance on a test\, this workshop links these essential principles to the everyday instructional decisions you make in your classroom. \nPracticing what we preach\, you will take part in an edge-of-your-seat learning experience that translates these principles to practices across multiple content areas and grade-levels. You will leave with strategies that will make learning stronger for all of your students. \nWorkshop is via Zoom (link will be sent to those registered). \nFee for non-CACE schools: $100

SUMMARY:History in Stones: Mapping Cemeteries to Preserve and Teach the History of Central Aroostook County (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sebold. The first StoryMap Journals will be available by February 2022. They will focus on the Aroostook Band of Micmacs. \nLook for announcements of additional Zoom workshops and/or contact Dr. Sebold directly if you would like to use materials or help ahead of Feb. 4. Her email is kimberly.sebold@maine.edu and her phone number is 207-762-2010.

SUMMARY:Social Emotional Learning And The Brain with Author Marilee Sprenger via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Social Emotional Learning and the Brain \nEvery student has a story. Teachers can help rewrite many of those stories and reinforce others. The path is clear: \n\nFostering student–teacher relationships\, empathy\, emotional awareness\, and self-regulation; building and handling peer relationships; and making responsible decisions will lead to success in school and in life.\nLinking strategies that activate and enhance appropriate brain responses will provide happier and healthier classrooms.\nUnderstanding emotions and the brain will lead to practical classroom applications\, reinforce what you are already doing and show you why it works\, and provide new avenues for teaching with the social-emotional brain in mind.\n\nLearn how to create positive childhood experiences that counter adverse childhood experiences\, and give students the tools to understand what is happening inside them and how to respond. This is the promise of a classroom based on social-emotional learning and the brain. \nCheck out Marilee’s website here! \n \nRegistration is free for CACE member schools and $50 per person for non-CACE member schools.

SUMMARY:Leader Connect with Kim Marshall (via Zoom) : Grading Practices
DESCRIPTION:Doug Reeves frequently asks audiences of educators what final grade they would give a student who received the following grades for assignments and homework (in this sequence) over the course of a semester:  C C missed D C missed B missed B A. Educators’ answers range from F to A\, revealing differences in how grades are computed from class to class. We’ll discuss whether this might be true in your school\, and how schools can reduce failures by having a consistent approach to zeroes\, averaging\, and other grading dilemmas.
