DESCRIPTION:  \nCACE is pleased to once again offer this workshop\, sure to be of interest for middle/high school history teachers\, as well as preservice teachers. \nDr. Kimberly Sebold\, History Professor at UMPI\, has been working on a public history project called History in Stones:  Mapping Cemeteries to Preserve and Teach the History of Central Aroostook County.  The project goal is twofold: create searchable maps of the cemeteries in Central Aroostook County using ArcGIS Online and write an interactive history of Central Aroostook County to be used by middle and high school social studies teachers who teach Maine History and American History.  ArcGIS Online StoryMap Journals will be the platform for these interactive histories of the area. To make history more relevant and tangible\, the project histories will focus on the lives of certain individuals in area cemeteries by explaining how world\, national and state events affected these people and Central Aroostook County communities. Curriculum will be developed and linked to the Maine State Learning Results for both the searchable cemetery maps and the interactive StoryMap Journals. All of the information will be posted on an UMPI supported website that is free to anyone. Area teachers can help by reviewing and using the materials in their classrooms and providing feedback. SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training (In Person\, UMPI Multi-Purpose Room)
DESCRIPTION:Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training \nAll Maine School districts are required to have a minimum of 2 staff complete a full day Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training for districts with up to 1\,000 students. The law recommends a Gatekeeper in each school building. The Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training is the foundation of the Maine Suicide Prevention Program (MSPP) and is a pre-requisite for the Training of Trainers (TOT) and the school-based curriculum training lessons. \nIn this full day training you will learn the foundations of suicide prevention; you will receive up-to-date information about suicide in Maine and in the U.S. This Gatekeeper training will address ways to break down the stigma barriers and how to hold those difficult conversations. This training will provide basic intervention skills and will build personal confidence to be able to effectively respond to suicidal behavior. Resources will be provided for intervention and postvention. \nInstructor Information: \nGreg Marley\, LCSW\, Suicide Prevention Director \nGreg has practiced in the field of community mental health in Maine for over 30 years\, as a clinician\, clinical supervisor\, manager\, trainer\, and consultant. Greg has presented across Maine and New England to a variety of audiences in suicide prevention\, substance abuse prevention\, mental health\, and other topics.  Since 2009 he has provided training and consultation to schools\, primary care practices\, hospitals\, and mental health programs supporting suicide prevention and intervention as well as support in the aftermath of a suicide loss.  In the rest of his life\, Greg is renown as an expert in edible\, medicinal and toxic wild mushrooms.   \nPlease note that all participants will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID result within the last 72 hours\, at the door. Masks will be required.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Maine Department of Education Social Emotional Learning Specialist Kellie Doyle Bailey MA CCC-SLP\, MMT/SELI as she provides a unique brain-based overview of the importance of growing Adult Emotional Intelligence and the purposeful teaching of the 5 Key Elements of SEL to children of all ages. Kellie will break down the premise of all behaviors tell us something about what a child is experiencing and how we can use SEL and Mindfulness tools/strategies to help children birth to 18 develop self-awareness\, self-regulation\, social awareness\, build strong connections/relationships with adults and peers and ultimately make responsible decisions. Participants will develop a core knowledge of Emotional Intelligence for adults and SEL for youth as well as walk away with practical strategies and techniques to help regulate to co-regulate for optimal health\, wellness\, engagement\, and participation in and out of the classroom setting. \nBio- Kellie Bailey\, Social Emotional Learning/Restorative Practice Specialist\, Maine Department of Education \nKellie Doyle Bailey is the SEL Specialist for the Maine Department of Education. Kellie brings to the field 30 years of experience working in Maine public schools as a speech/language pathologist and more recently mindfulness and SEL educator. She is the founder of The Children’s Collaboration Center and Calm Cool Kids Educate. Kellie has a deep knowledge and understanding of the neuro-developmental sequences of humans’ birth to adult and in assisting educators\, support staff\, families\, and community partners with understanding reactive and responsive learner patterns of dysregulated children. \nShe is passionate about building awareness of the essential development of adult emotional intelligence and for assisting all adults working directly with youth to find ways to embed Social Emotional Learning into real life learning experiences. Kellie holds a core belief that SEL is critical in keeping kids safe\, connected\, and cared for and ultimately the impetus for lifelong happiness and success.  Only through the expansion and knowledge of our own emotional intelligence work and the cultivation of true practice of being present for ourselves can we then be present for our children. \nKellie encourages adults to fully understand that children can only work optimally when they feel safe\, connected\, and cared for. Assisting all students in the development of a strong foundational in social emotional learning allows each in becoming responsive rather than reactive to the demands of learning. Kellie is a firm believer that embedding SEL into everyday instruction is a strong step in building trauma informed\, best practice schools. Kellie serves as an adjunct instructor for The University of Maine- Farmington\, teaching Mindfulness in Education and she is the author Some Days I Flip My Lid and Some Nights I Flip My Lid -Learning to be a Calm Cool Kid– mindfulness books in publication through PESI publishing.
