DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Maine at Presque Isle on May 18 from 6pm-8pm for an important community conversation! \nUMPI Community Conversation Description \nWe often think of our society as a place where everyone has the same (or close to the same) opportunity to succeed and thrive. However\, historical patterns of sorting/ranking each other (by race\, religion\, gender\, language\, and orientation) still have powerful effects on how we relate to one another today. Forms of bias and structural inequity negatively impact the health and well-being of marginalized populations and stall our collective ability to thrive. This community conversation will provide an initial introduction to implicit bias and how increasing our awareness and understanding of bias directly relates to advancing greater equity of opportunity\, experience\, and outcomes in our local institutions and communities. Here we invite community members to join Mindbridge Executive Director Laura Ligouri\, in exploring our experience with bias and opportunities to collectively advance opportunities within our communities.  \nAbout Mindbridge \nMindbridge is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the impact of local\, national and international human rights work by integrating psychological and neurobiological applied science. Mindbridge uses neuroscience and psychology to assess the values\, beliefs\, motivations\, and drivers of violence in order to develop more effective interventions and propel change. We partner with government and community-based organizations to co-develop a holistic approach to societal transformation. It is ultimately through our understanding of how the brain gives rise to the mind that we no longer work to simply combat human rights abuses in an endless cycle of violence\, but guide the psyche towards the strengthening of society built upon the tenets of human rights itself. Here neurobiological and psychological sciences propel data-driven intervention and program design\, giving human rights defenders access to the hearts and minds they need to connect to most. For more information visit: www.mindbridgecenter.org  \nAbout Laura Ligouri \nLaura Ligouri is the Executive Director and Founder of Mindbridge. Her interest in the intersection of neuroscience and human rights emerged while at the Saxelab Social Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at MIT\, where neurobiological research often sought to understand the biological underpinnings of implicit bias\, inter-ethnic social conflict\, violence and conversely collective empowerment and change. Laura’s interests lie at the intersection of how neurobiological processes\, culture and societal influences converge to give rise to and perpetuate bias\, discrimination and violence within and among groups. Laura teaches the Neuropsychology of Social Justice at the University of Southern Maine and is currently spearheading efforts to develop a national guideline for psychologists’ involvement with domestic counterterrorism efforts. Laura will present with the American Psychological Association on public psychology and its role in countering hate at the 2022 Science\, Technology and Human Rights Conference hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. DESCRIPTION:The Central Aroostook Council on Education is proud to present John Almarode and How We Learn: 5 Essential Practices for Successful Learning. \n“I don’t know” and “I don’t remember” are phrases that haunt every classroom teacher and learner. How do we create experiences that lead to better learning for all students so that they will “know” and “remember”? Over the past fifteen years\, the science of learning has provided many insights into how we think. Furthermore\, these promising principles provide a starting point for inspired and passionate teachers to build the capacity in learners to see themselves as their own teachers. This workshop shows you how! The body of research on how we learn provides well established principles and practices that enhance the learning outcomes for each of our students. Moving beyond performance on a test\, this workshop links these essential principles to the everyday instructional decisions you make in your classroom. \nPracticing what we preach\, you will take part in an edge-of-your-seat learning experience that translates these principles to practices across multiple content areas and grade-levels. You will leave with strategies that will make learning stronger for all of your students. \nDr. John Almarode\, a bestselling author\, has worked with schools\, classrooms\, and teachers all over the world. He has presented locally\, nationally\, and internationally on the application of the science of learning to the classroom\, school\, and home environments. He has worked with hundreds of school districts and thousands of teachers in Australia\, Canada\, England\, Saudi Arabia\, Scotland\, South Korea\, and Thailand. \nIn addition to devoting his time to PreK – 12 schools and classrooms\, he is an Associate Professor at James Madison University in the College of Education. In 2015\, John was awarded the inaugural Sarah Miller Luck Endowed Professorship. He continues to work with pre‑service teachers and actively pursues his research interests including the science of learning\, the design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement and learning. \nThe work of John and his colleagues has been presented to the United States Congress\, Virginia Senate\, at the United States Department of Education as well as the Office of Science and Technology Policy at The White House. \nJohn began his career in Augusta County\, Virginia\, teaching mathematics and science to a wide‑range of students. Since then\, John has authored multiple articles\, reports\, book chapters\, and eleven books including Captivate\, Activate\, and Invigorate the Student Brain in Science and Math\, Grades 6 – 12 (Corwin Press\, 2013)\, From Snorkelers to Scuba Divers (Corwin Press\, 2018)\, both with Ann Miller\, and Visible Learning for Science\, with Doug Fisher\, Nancy Frey\, and John Hattie (Corwin Press\, 2018). He recently finished a book focusing on clarity\, Clarity for Learning\, with Kara Vandas (Corwin Press\, 2019)\, as well as Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom\, Grades 6 – 8\, and Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom\, Grades 9 – 12 both with Doug Fisher\, Joseph Assof\, Sara Moore\, Nancy Frey\, and John Hattie (Corwin\, 2019)\, all with Corwin Press. Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom\, Grades K – 2 and Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom\, Grades 3 – 5 with the same author team plus Kateri Thunder hit the shelves in March of 2019. He is also the past co-editor of the Teacher Educator’s Journal. \nMost recently\, John and his colleagues have developed a new framework for developing\, implementing\, and sustaining professional learning communities: PLC+. Focusing on sustained change in teacher practice\, the PLC+ framework builds capacity within teacher-led teams to maximize student learning. The books\, PLC+ Better Decisions and Greater Impact by Design\, The PLC+ Playbook\, Grades K – 12\, The PLC+ Activator’s Guide will support this work in schools and classrooms.

PBIS is a Multi-Tiered System of Support recognized by IDEA (see PBIS.org). \nPBIS establishes\, aligns\, and integrates data\, systems and practices in order to achieve district and school goals. To make history more relevant and tangible\, the project histories will focus on the lives of certain individuals in area cemeteries by explaining how world\, national and state events affected these people and Central Aroostook County communities. Curriculum will be developed and linked to the Maine State Learning Results for both the searchable cemetery maps and the interactive StoryMap Journals. All of the information will be posted on an UMPI supported website that is free to anyone. Area teachers can help by reviewing and using the materials in their classrooms and providing feedback. SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training (In Person\, UMPI Multi-Purpose Room)
DESCRIPTION:Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training \nAll Maine School districts are required to have a minimum of 2 staff complete a full day Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training for districts with up to 1\,000 students. The law recommends a Gatekeeper in each school building. The Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training is the foundation of the Maine Suicide Prevention Program (MSPP) and is a pre-requisite for the Training of Trainers (TOT) and the school-based curriculum training lessons. \nIn this full day training you will learn the foundations of suicide prevention; you will receive up-to-date information about suicide in Maine and in the U.S. This Gatekeeper training will address ways to break down the stigma barriers and how to hold those difficult conversations. This training will provide basic intervention skills and will build personal confidence to be able to effectively respond to suicidal behavior. Resources will be provided for intervention and postvention. \nInstructor Information: \nGreg Marley\, LCSW\, Suicide Prevention Director \nGreg has practiced in the field of community mental health in Maine for over 30 years\, as a clinician\, clinical supervisor\, manager\, trainer\, and consultant. Greg has presented across Maine and New England to a variety of audiences in suicide prevention\, substance abuse prevention\, mental health\, and other topics.  Since 2009 he has provided training and consultation to schools\, primary care practices\, hospitals\, and mental health programs supporting suicide prevention and intervention as well as support in the aftermath of a suicide loss.  In the rest of his life\, Greg is renown as an expert in edible\, medicinal and toxic wild mushrooms.   \nPlease note that all participants will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID result within the last 72 hours\, at the door.
