DESCRIPTION:Ellie Drago-Severson\, College of Education and Human Development Shibles Distinguished Visiting Professor\, will offer four institute-style workshops. \nDrago-Severson is a professor of educational leadership and adult education and learning at Teachers College\, Columbia University. A developmental psychologist\, she teaches\, conducts research and consults for school and district leaders\, teacher leaders\, and other organizations on professional and personal growth and learning. \nHer work focuses on supporting leadership development for principals\, teachers and schools\, as well as coaching and mentoring in PreK–12 schools\, university settings and other adult education contexts. She is inspired by the idea that schools should be places where adults and children can grow\, and she is dedicated to creating conditions to achieve this and to help leaders and educators of all kinds do the same on behalf of supporting adults and youth. \nDrago-Severson has written several books\, including “Helping Teachers Learn: Principal Leadership for Adult Growth and Development”; “Leading Adult Learning: Supporting Adult Development in Our Schools”; “Becoming Adult Learners: Principles and Practices for Effective Development”; and “Helping Educators Grow: Practices and Strategies for Supporting Leadership Development.” She also has co-authored “Learning for Leadership; Learning Designs”; “Tell Me So I Can Hear You”; and “Leading Change Together.” \nThis workshop is one of four free\, public institutes that will be held in the McIntire Room at University of Maine at Orono\, Buchanan Alumni House. SUMMARY:Beyond the Mandate: Resources for Incorporating Native American History and Culture into the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 2\, 9-10:30am in Room 118\, UMPI Campus Center. \nJoin Starr Kelly\, Curator of Education at the Abbe Museum\, for a rich and engaging presentation on incorporating Maine Native American history and culture into elementary and secondary schools – a requirement of Maine statute LD291.  Starr leads the museum’s education and public programs work\, including program development and delivery\, teacher training\, and educational resource development. She is a member of the Algonquin First Nation of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg in Quebec. Starr has been a middle and high school social studies teacher\, and is a social justice oriented educator\, developing what she refers to as a “curriculum for dignity.”  Her lessons and pedagogical approach put theory into practice by honoring those she teaches about while simultaneously creating an environment which is responsive to the needs of her learners and dignifies her students’ lived experiences. \nAroostook County educators at all grade levels are welcome to attend this free event (contact hours available through CACE). \n
